Bell South creates a new name for their wireless company, Cinuglar. AT&T splits their wireless division into separate company. Cingular Buys AT&T Wireless. SBC merges with AT&T, keeps the name AT&T. The new AT&T buys Bell South which is the parent company of Cingular.

Right after I wrote this I found Engadget had a more detailed version of the story

Update 2007: Now they’ve gone and done it. AT&T now bought Cingular, as is changing the name of the wireless company formerly known as Cingular back to AT&T.
